Who's up for a $1500 challenge?
The challenge is to buy a car, spend less than $1500 in total on it (labor excluded of course), and whoever wins the season/next event has to offer it for sale for $1500...
Could be an interesting sub class next year...
Having said that, I did just think of it, so it's a million miles from being endorsed, but it seems to work for the finns.
i didnt pay anything my car so im actually going to make 1500 dollars profit is that right ?
If you win, yeah. :)
I think we'll get a lot more takers if we lower the bar, particularly to kick it off.
The BMSC are looking at the same sort of thing with a $500 limit - calling it a Sh*theap Challenge series.
Too bad if you're a front wheel drive expert and end up with a Gemini or something like that.
Most X3's now can be had for about $300 with little needed to be spent on them - safety gear and tyres mostly.
i rekon if you scout around for long enough and just talk to people in the motoring community you will be able to get cars for under 300 possibly even free, the pulsar i ran in the last event i got for free, and soon im getting another one for free which will be built into a caged autocross car, the good thing about pulsars is that they only weigh 890 standard so they are perfectly suited
890kg.. that seems pretty light, carsguide.com.au says 1000kg for the 1.8L manual and the original brochure says 1025kg.

Do any of the Pulsars out at Bormsa have the viscous LSD gearbox in them? I wonder how effective they are?
Wavey.
Come on wavey - you'd have an unfair advantage, it being your third road car and all... Jeez that thing was dodgy.
Had some torque though....
How about a $700 Excel challenge then?
my pulsar has viscous lsd in it... it is a class above the standard box ... when i looked up stats for pulsar weight, the had 1000 kilos listed for the sedan version, that said my sources may very well be dodgy :)
I agree sounds fun but needs to be around 500 - 600 dollars,
i wouldnt spend 1500 dollars for the year inc fuel and entry fees
well im out, my car cost me $1500 and has had more money spent on it aswell.
The viscous LSDs in the pulsars are good when they're new, but the general consensus seems to be that they wear out (too) quickly. I've got two for the charade (not nissan ones), and one is noticably more useless than the other.
It seems that the fluid in them wears out (same as viscous fan couplings), and you can buy the silicone fluid, but there's not a lot of information about DIYing this. Also, the internal plates wear out too, but they're probably not replaceable.
I'd be interested in the fixed price series, more at the $500-700 level though. And you'd have to exclude things like seats, harnesses and cages. Safety equipment cannot be part of the budget, and hence not transferable.
Less than $500 is just going to be a waste of everyone's time. You can't get anything remotely good from pickles for that money (in my limited experience).
I agree safety equiptment shouldnt be included eg: belts seats cage . but cars must be returned to racing condition for sale, $700 dollars sounds like a good number to me, i personally know about 5 cars that could be in that grade now.
what should we call the class???
POVERTY PACK CLASS!
I have owned about 14 different cars in the last 8 years and the most I have paid for any of them is $400. All the Mitsubishi's I have had have been trophy winning cars. The one I have at the moment is a rocket, consistantly top 5 in Bunbury, so It is pretty easy to do a car for under $700. Sounds like a good thing as all our top cars are worth thousands. One question, how does someone prove how much their car cost, especially if you have owned it for a while?
That's the reason for having the mandatory offering for sale at the end of the season.
If you're prepared to bend the rules and spend a little more, then be prepared to have your pride and joy bought off you for $500.
Thinking about it though, I agree that $500 or $700 would be more realistic, with safety stuff excluded. Tyres?
Could be an interesting side championship. I suppose the problem is, that we're already up on the entry limit - do we want to encourage more entrants in crappy cars, or more entrants in fancier cars?
I think one set of tyres should be included, as the car should be sold ready to race
how about "THE CHEEP ASS CLASS"
It is supposed to be entry level motorsport, so bring on the crap heaps! If you can afford to go rallying, then mortgage your house & go. Leave the poor people to thrash about in their paddock bashers!
we got the excel for 400 and have only spent 200 on it but doubt i will win anything, espeially seen i cant do khanax's yet.
Leave the poor people to thrash about in their paddock bashers!
That's true, but I reckon a minimum standard of car makes racing more fun. At least you might have a chance at some reliability...
Absolutely, that is why you have scrutineering. As for reliability, it is in the drivers best interest, no finish no win. What I am trying to say I think this concept is a great idea & I hope it catches on. It would be ideal for the Juniors with a very limited budget. Good luck with it!!
